Update - The well is now pumping water in the village of Mulot. We still need tanks to hold it because it is not fast enough to use. Please continue to donate and we give a big thanks in advance!
An
enormous problem that is facing the Mulot village is that it is without a
reliable source of clean drinking water.
This problem is especially pressing during the dry season.
In
Mulot, most people have few choices available when it comes to obtaining
water. The first choice is to go
to the Amala River and get water where there is a major risk of falling in. The
second choice is to go to one of the stagnant and potentially disease ridden
puddles a few miles from the town. The third choice is to buy the water from
women of the area who fetch the same river water and sell it in town. What
do all these choices have in common? The water is dirty and hazardous to the
citizen’s health.
The
mission that Small Planet Big Plans is located on is blessed with a clean source
of water. The mission is able to access this water from two locations.
The
first location is a small spring that bubbles up from underground. The spring
is where it gets the water from during the rainy season. The problem is that during the dry
season, the spring dries up or becomes stagnant. This causes just as many health problems as the dirty river water
or the other puddles that many of the other citizens get their water from. The other source is an already dug
borehole that reaches water about 70 meters down. The only problem is that it
has no way of getting the water out of the well.
The spring is barely
able to sustain the mission during the wet season, but as rain becomes scarce,
the water can no longer be relied on to cover basic needs of the school. Due to this reason, Small Planet Big
Plans has developed the Community Well Project. The first step is to install an
electric pump in order to get the water out of the ground.
The next the
step is to build two 100,000 liter tanks to hold the water is pumped out. These
tanks will allow Small Planet Big Planet to store enough water in order to
sustain not just the mission, but also the entire town.
Then, in order
to make sure no one is put out of a job, particularly those who desperately
need one, people will be employed by the mission to sell this water to the town
at the same price. Next, a septic
tank must be installed. This will allow the water to be put into the plumbing
system. Finally, once clean water for the village is achieved, solar panels will
be put into place in order to harness the power of sunlight. This means that
many of the people living on the mission will enjoy having a hot shower for the
first time in their life.
All donations are needed in order to achieve
this goal!
